It was 1999. To most, it seemed that the barbering trade was breathing its last breath. However, the passionate founder of Layrite, Donnie Hawley, was still in pursuit of perfecting his clients’ haircuts. His technique was hindered by the traditional petroleum-based products his clients wore and that wouldn’t wash out. Never wanting to limit style, but committed to a high barbering standard, Donnie worked to find a solution. The end result was a water-soluble pomade formulated to “Hold like wax and wash out like gel.”
